Plan Alicante as a city break with beach time, rather than only the airport gateway to another resort. Give yourself a full city day and another flexible day if you can. The castle, waterfront and an easy walk around the centre make a useful first-visit outline without needing a car for every outing.
Make Santa Bárbara your main viewpoint
Official Alicante visitor information places Santa Bárbara Castle on Mount Benacantil and describes pedestrian, lift and shuttle access. Check current operating arrangements before choosing how to go up, particularly if walking uphill would be difficult. A lift shown on a tourism page should not be treated as a guarantee that it is operating that day.
Choose the return route as well as the ascent and allow time to explore rather than arriving just before closing. Confirm current admission and any special-visit conditions. Do not rely on a remembered closing time: the published timetable varies by season and events can affect it.
Free castle, paid ways up
The tourist office's dated exhibition information covering September 2026 to February 2027 states that ordinary castle access is free, while the lift costs €2.70 and the minibus €1.45 per journey. These are different services, not an admission surcharge that everyone must pay. A guided or special activity can have its own charge. Start your comparison with the free ordinary visit, then choose the ascent that fits your group rather than buying an unspecified castle package.
For 5 September–14 November the published castle hours are 10:00–20:00; for 15 November–27 February they are 10:00–18:00. On 1 November 2026, therefore, the earlier seasonal period still applies. The official calendar also lists closures on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 and 6 January. Allow at least an hour before the published closing time for a meaningful arrival, and longer if you want to explore slowly. A paid lift saves part of the ascent but does not establish that all internal paths are level or accessible.
Combine the waterfront with Postiguet
Postiguet beach sits below the castle area and can form part of a slower day. Add an Explanada walk and time in the centre without trying to treat every stop as a separate excursion. Plan a shaded or indoor break if the forecast makes a long exposed walk uncomfortable.
If swimming, use local flags and conditions to decide. Check your exact beach access if travelling with mobility needs, children or bulky equipment. Keep valuables and travel documents secure rather than taking everything you own onto the sand.
Put the steep part before the beach
For a first full day, make Santa Bárbara the morning activity, then return towards Postiguet and the centre for lunch. The Explanada de España is the palm-lined promenade beside the port; Santa Cruz is a neighbourhood of narrow lanes and steps on the hillside. They offer different walks, so select the order according to your energy after the castle. A relaxed itinerary can stop at the waterfront without adding another climb.
If the forecast is hot, refine the plan: a short early castle visit, an indoor or shaded middle of the day, and the Explanada later. For an easier afternoon, remain around Postiguet rather than walking until you need an unexpected taxi. A three-night stay gives you two full days: one for the castle and centre, another for a chosen beach or excursion. With only one full day, stay local. That provides more time in Alicante than spending the middle of it on transport towards a second resort.
Use transport for a chosen outing
Investigate the TRAM network for a coastal journey, checking the actual stops and any transfer needed for your destination. Compare the final walk too: reaching a town's transport stop is not necessarily reaching its beach or old centre.
If adding Tabarca, check current sailings, weather arrangements and the return before booking. Do not put a boat trip immediately before a flight without a realistic backup. For a different coastal base, read the Benidorm guide and compare the transfer you would actually make.
Two very different second days
Playa de San Juan is a mainland beach outing to compare with Postiguet. Tabarca is an island excursion with a boat departure and a weather-dependent return. Choosing Tabarca means working backwards from an actual sailing: confirm which mainland port the ticket uses, the meeting point and the return included. A cheap fare from a different departure port is not the same journey as a boat from Alicante. Keep the day before your flight local if a cancellation would make the schedule difficult.
For a TRAM outing, locate both the departure stop and the destination stop before choosing a restaurant or beach. The transport network is a way of reaching a chosen place, rather than an attraction that automatically delivers you at the waterfront. For airport travel, distinguish the airport bus from the coastal TRAM. On arrival, confirm whether your accommodation is near the bus stop or requires an additional walk with luggage; on departure, compare the operating timetable with the airline's reporting time. Save the full accommodation address and entry instructions, especially if a late flight takes you outside reception hours.
Keep arrival and departure simple
A suggested two-day plan is a castle-and-centre day followed by a beach or coastal outing. Swap them if weather or access makes that more sensible. Confirm your airport connection for the date and time of your flight.
- Ask accommodation about luggage storage before check-in.
- Save the station, stop or transfer meeting point offline.
- Check the final return before leaving on an excursion.
- Leave space after a hill walk rather than booking another strenuous activity.
For a longer journey, Valencia deserves its own planning and accommodation decision.
Entry for UK and US visitors
UK and US tourists can visit visa-free for 90 days in any 180 across Schengen. Check UK entry advice and the EU travel site before departure: EES records entries and exits, as checked on 1 November 2026, ETIAS still announces a launch in the last quarter of 2026 without a precise start date, and the EU says no traveller action is required yet. Requirements change; count previous Schengen trips as well as this holiday.
Staying connected
Save the castle return route, Tabarca sailing confirmation and airport pickup point before heading out. A data-only eSIM for Spain can be installed before travelling, supplies local data on arrival and keeps your own SIM in place for an Alicante city break.
